Mabon: Gratitude, Balance & Trusting What Comes Next

There is a particular kind of magic in autumn.

It arrives quietly—in cooler mornings, changing leaves, earlier sunsets, and that unmistakable feeling that the earth is beginning to turn inward.

Mabon, celebrated around the autumn equinox, offers us an opportunity to notice that shift.

It is a season associated with harvest, gratitude and balance—a moment when day and night meet in near-equal measure before we begin our journey toward the darker half of the year.

For me personally, the beauty of this season isn’t necessarily found in doing more to celebrate it. Sometimes it’s found simply in noticing.

It’s about honoring what brought us to this point in the season.

When we think of harvest, we often picture abundance: baskets overflowing, tables filled, gardens giving us the last of what they’ve grown.

However, our own personal harvests aren’t always things we can hold. Our harvests lie in questions we might ask ourselves.

What have you learned this cycle?

What have you survived?

What has grown within you?

What did you have the courage to begin?

What are you doing differently today that an earlier version of you struggled to do?

Not every seed we plant produces exactly what we expected.

Some things flourish.

Some change direction.

Some never take root at all.

Yet all of it becomes part of the journey.

This season invites us to honor that journey without needing to judge every part of it as a success or failure.

We can simply say:

I honor where I’ve been.

I have Gratitude for What Is Here

Gratitude can become complicated when we treat it as an obligation to be positive.

You can be grateful and still want change.

You can appreciate what you have and still grieve what you don’t.

You can recognize something beautiful in your life while acknowledging that another part feels difficult.

Perhaps that is one of the quiet lessons within the autumn equinox itself: balance does not mean everything is perfect or even.

It means light and shadow are both allowed to exist.

So rather than asking yourself to create an enormous gratitude list, try something gentler.

What is one thing in your life right now that feels good?

A person.

A warm cup of tea.

Your home.

Your pet curled beside you.

A friendship.

A lesson you finally understand.

A moment of peace you didn’t have six months ago.

Let it be enough.

Read or say out loud: I am grateful for what I have.

Trusting What Is Still Unfolding

Autumn is also an incredible teacher of release. Trees don’t cling to every leaf because they’re afraid there will never be another one. Nature releases what has completed its season and trusts what comes next—even when what comes next looks quiet, bare or uncertain.

Release can be much harder for us.

We like answers.

We like timelines.

Let’s be real, we like knowing that if we release one thing, something better will immediately arrive to take its place. However, sometimes there is space between chapters. Sometimes the next thing is still taking shape.

Perhaps we don’t have to rush to fill that space.

We can simply trust it.

Read or say out loud: I trust what is still unfolding.

An Affirmation for the Season

As we move through this seasonal transition, this is the affirmation I’m carrying with me and I want to share this with you:

I honor where I’ve been.
I am grateful for what I have.
I trust what is still unfolding.

I am rooted, open, and in alignment with what’s next.

You might sit with these words during meditation, write them in your journal, repeat them during Reiki or simply return to them when you feel yourself worrying about what comes next.

You don’t have to know what the next season holds to be grounded in the one you’re standing in now.

A Simple Way to Honor Mabon

Your seasonal practice does not have to be elaborate to be meaningful.

Light a candle.

Make a warm drink.

Step outside and notice what is changing.

Bring a few fallen leaves inside.

Prepare something with apples, herbs, squash or another seasonal food.

Write down three things you’re grateful for—and one thing you’re ready to stop carrying.

Sit quietly for a few minutes and ask yourself:

What am I harvesting from this chapter of my life?

Then listen. That can be ritual enough.

Moving Into the Next Season

Mabon doesn’t need to be about doing everything. It can simply be a pause. It’s a moment between what has been and what will be. It’s a chance to look behind you with compassion, look around you with gratitude, and look ahead without demanding that the entire path reveal itself.

The leaves will change.

The light will shift.

The next season will come whether we rush toward it or not.

For now, perhaps it is enough to stand exactly where you are and say:

I honor where I’ve been.
I am grateful for what I have.
And I trust what is still unfolding.

May you feel rooted in what is here, open to what is changing, and supported as you move gently into whatever comes next.
